CHINA BASIN... The best way to describe China Basin is as an industrial part of San Francisco , with now-unused train and trolley tracks leading nowhere. China Basin has some port facilities and several piers proudly proclaiming “ Port of San Francisco ”, but the area has never been the center of San Francisco waterfront life. The area is bordered by Highway 280 to the west, the Bay to the east, the Mission Creek Marina to the north, and 16 th Street to the south.
The main reason people ever arrive in China Basin is when they take 3 rd Street on it bizarre twist around the city. Ever wonder how a place could be located at 3 rd and 16 th Streets? It's because 3 rd Street decides to hang a right before it his the Bay, and runs through the heart of China Basin almost all the way down to Candlestick (3COM) Park.
